Operation: REEL

Now with graduation over, summer vacation complete and my computer fixed. My mission ..and yes I choose to accept it, is to create a stellar demo reel. The goal? To get that dream job as an animator..So from now on I will be posting updates of my work as it progresses. I'm going to try to revisit Self Checkout when i can..so don't count Carl out completely.

My main area of focus is..
1) A good serious dialogue piece..
2) two Action/physical shots
3) Creature shot

I'm trying to keep focused on preparation and research for each piece as I get them solidified in my trusty notebook. The more i prepare the better and faster the animation will get done!

Week....I lost count already..

Well the Saga continues!!! and how!! okay, i've been asked to tightening the latter end of this short where Carl gets angrier and angrier. Also Shot 10 needs a bit more connection to the previous shots. Carl needs to be a little grumpier and suspicous of the monitor, right now he just looks like he's scanning items..which was the approach i was going for, but apparently it looses connection to what just happened.

New Animatic

I was told it would be wise to trim Self Checkout a bit..Before this, it was running at over 3 minutes and 30 seconds. I managed to trim it down. Of course in the process i lost some scenes that i worked very hard to animated..but in the long run its for the best.

The perfect tune for my toon?

The Girl from Ipanema
Yes Betty would love it don't you think? Maybe..but now that i've had time to look at it with my short, it sounds to happy and destracting with it's repatitivness..

Notes for Week 2 GDS class

Overall my progress is good. Some parts are more developed than others. I need to remember to animate those shoulders and be observant of "connectivity". By that i mean how an action causes a ripple affect throughout the body. For instance on shot number 6 Carl pushes a button on the screen. However this push isn't read because there is no overlap from the rest of the body, especially in the shoulders and upper torso. So the key there is to let the force from the hand be reflected through the arms shoulders, head, upper body and a little on the root.
Also I need to observe what parts of the body are leading in a certain action.
Another not is to BREAK THE TIMING in order to keep things from moving at the same time. Especially in shot 6. On Shot 5 i've been asked to cheat the monitor a little more towards the camera for a better composition when the camera finally stops.

NOTES: Workshop Critiques

Going to keep moving along with the shots.
After showing my work at the workshop, it was pointed out that i have to be careful with showing weight from the basket especially on shot 3. Basket arm should move less and take longer to get to where it needs to be . Another note is that i should tone down the reaction on shot 3, since Carl will be exploding with anger later on in the film. This way i conserve that energy for later in order to have a better build up throughout the film.

No Betty in Self Checkout?

Sadly there will be no Betty. I decided to cut her out, it just wasn't working out. But no worries!! she will have a cameo. I plan to make her a missing person on the milk carton.

Progress..

Well, Self Checkout is getting animated....Finally!
There has been mention that shot 2 and 3 have broken the 180 rule. Will have to rearrange the camera in order to get it right.
I also have to add a "moving hold" at the beginning of shot 3.
